Paisaje Flotante proposes the creation of an artificial landscape capable of bringing the Baix Ebre region into the urban center of Tortosa through a selection of plant species native to the region’s wetlands. The project is conceived as an ephemeral structure where architecture, water, and vegetation combine to create a space for gathering, relaxation, and observation of the Mediterranean landscape.
The project also prompts a reflection on the very idea of nature and on the ways in which it is continually constructed, mediated, and represented within the contemporary urban context. Rather than literally reproducing a natural environment, the proposal highlights the artificial nature of any designed landscape, understanding nature as a cultural and material reality constantly transformed by human action. Through a flooded surface and a design sensitive to the climatic context, Paisaje Flotante partially recreates the environmental conditions of the delta’s wetlands, fostering new relationships between the body, climate, and territory.
In collaboration with the regional organization Mare Terra Fundació Mediterrània, which promotes nature conservation in the area, Paisaje Flotante combines species that are easily observable in the local landscape (mastic and sea lavender), as well as those that are endangered and with which the local population has therefore lost contact (Spirodela polyrrhiza). The presence of water is understood as an environmental mechanism capable of producing coolness, humidity, and microclimatic variations in the courtyard of the Monastery of the Puríssima Concepció Victòria.
Finally, Paisaje Flotante incorporates a notion of circularity that links nature and architecture as a single metabolic system. The materials are designed to be dismantled, reused, or reconfigured, thereby reducing their long-term impact. Similarly, the vegetation is not viewed as a static element, but rather as a living flow that can be reintroduced into the landscape, extending ecological cycles beyond the installation, or distributed among the residents of Tortosa at the end of the festival to raise awareness about the regional landscape.
