A historic dwelling located on San Bernardo Street in Madrid is reimagined through a careful renovation of a highly deteriorated condition. The house, structured along a narrow bay, presented significant challenges in terms of spatial organisation and natural light, particularly in its deeper interior zones, which remained dark and underused due to its original configuration.
The intervention works through a strategy of selective perforations in existing walls, allowing light and visual continuity to penetrate previously closed areas. Key spaces are expanded and reconnected, improving spatial perception and enhancing the overall fluidity of the domestic sequence within the constraints of the original structure.
A flexible and adaptable programme is introduced through lightweight partitions, curtains, and open-plan configurations that allow the house to transform according to different uses. Material choices are carefully calibrated to the existing building, reinforcing its character while restoring a sense of continuity and essence to the historic fabric.
The spatial organisation follows a clear gradient of privacy, with the most public areas positioned towards the street façade. These spaces engage with the urban context, benefiting from greater light and openness while maintaining a controlled relationship with the exterior.
Towards the rear, the house gradually shifts into more intimate and private zones. This transition is achieved through spatial depth rather than rigid partitions, creating a continuous yet differentiated domestic sequence that balances openness, functionality, and privacy.
